The most economical way to ship driveable vehicles

Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessels let vehicles drive on and off via the stern ramp — no lifting, no dismantling. It is the preferred method for exporting new cars, used cars, buses, trucks and self-propelled machinery. Compared with containers, Ro-Ro offers faster handling and lower unit freight, with multi-deck stowage and each unit secured to dedicated lashing points.

Shanghai SIDAJA Supply Chain Co., Ltd. holds long-term space agreements with major RORO carriers, with loading available at five Chinese ports. From quotation and booking, SI & cargo cutoff confirmation, terminal gate-in and export customs to on-board loading supervision, a dedicated specialist follows every step — with photo records and B/L tracking after departure.

RORO Shipping FAQ

The questions our clients ask most about RORO vehicle shipping

How are vehicles secured on board, and how is damage controlled?
Vehicles are parked in designated deck slots and secured by the terminal's professional lashing team using nylon straps fixed to dedicated deck lashing points, with wheel chocks and safe spacing between units. Our on-site supervisor photographs every vehicle's exterior and securing condition at loading, creating a handover record. RORO damage rates are far lower than lift-on/lift-off, and photo evidence enables fast liability assessment and claims if anything goes wrong.
Can electric vehicles go by RORO?
Yes. EVs are declared under UN3171 (battery-powered vehicles). MSDS, UN38.3 test summary and other documents must be submitted in advance for carrier pre-check, and battery state of charge must be kept within the carrier's limit. Approval criteria vary by carrier; we usually obtain the pre-check result within 1–3 working days and release space only after approval, avoiding booking cancellations.
How should I manage SI cutoff and cargo cutoff times?
Once booking is confirmed, we notify you in writing of the sailing's SI cutoff and cargo cutoff: B/L instructions (SI) and VGM must be submitted before SI cutoff, and vehicles must complete terminal gate-in before cargo cutoff. Cargo cutoff is typically 2–3 days before departure, so we recommend dispatching vehicles to the port at least 3–4 days ahead to leave buffer for customs and inspection. Final cutoff dates follow the carrier's notice, and we remind you shipment by shipment.
Is cargo insurance included in RORO freight?
Ocean freight does not include insurance. We recommend insuring vehicles under marine All Risks based on cargo value. We can arrange insurance on your behalf — the premium is usually a few per mille of the cargo value — and assist with claims if needed. For high-value vehicles and premium used cars, insurance plus pre-loading exterior photos as underwriting evidence is strongly advised.
Which ports handle RORO loading, and how do I choose?
We mainly arrange RORO loading at five ports: Shanghai, Lianyungang, Qingdao, Nansha and Ningbo. The choice depends on three factors: distance between the vehicles' location and the port (inland drayage cost), destination coverage (each port serves different port rotations), and sailing frequency. Tell us where your vehicles are and where they are going, and we will recommend the port with the best overall cost.
What if I have no customs broker at the destination port?
We work with partner agents at major ports across the Middle East, Africa and South America, offering destination clearance, vehicle pickup, duty payment and door-to-door delivery, with DAP / DDP terms supported. We can quote destination charges and estimated transit time together with ocean freight, so you avoid heavy demurrage and storage costs after arrival.
